The Arrival of the First Snows: An Awaited Event
When does the snow arrive in Savoie and Haute-Savoie?
The first snow at altitude usually arrives at the end of September or the beginning of October, but it is mainly from November onwards that the snow cover becomes significant:
- Late September - October : First snows above 2,500 m
- November : Gradual snowfall at high-altitude resorts (2,000 m and above)
- December : Widespread snow cover, most resorts open
- January-February : Peak snowfall, optimal conditions
Factors Influencing Snowfall
Altitude: Resorts above 2,000 m benefit from earlier and more lasting snow cover
Exposure: North-facing slopes retain snow better
Weather: Disturbances coming from the west are bringing snowfall
Glaciers: Some resorts (Tignes, Val d'Isère) can open as early as October thanks to their glaciers.
