About this image
Grande Casse towers above the Vanoise refuge in the last light of day. The building occupies a lower plane, surrounded by an unbroken blanket of snow, while the summit and its glacial slopes take on warm tones above shadows that have already settled in. Two buildings appear at the foot of the great white mountain. Their small scale conveys the vastness of the slopes, while the golden-pink light on the summit continues into a pink and violet sky. The continuous snow around the refuges links the architecture to the terrain: the built forms remain distinct, yet fully belong to this high-mountain expanse.
The photograph brings the human scale of the refuge into relation with the mass of the summit. Limestone lines, snowfields and changes in light structure the depth without overloading the scene, with a gradual transition from the ochres of sunset to the cool blues of the valleys.
The refuge stands at Col de la Vanoise, at 2,518 metres above sea level, above Pralognan-la-Vanoise. Nearby rises Grande Casse, the highest point of the massif and of Savoie at 3,855 metres, in the heart of Vanoise National Park.
Printed to order on matte aluminium Dibond, this photo print of Grande Casse and the Vanoise refuge preserves the finesse of the relief, the softness of the evening light and the balance between high-altitude architecture and the high mountains.
