Where to see the bearded vulture in the Alps?
Seeing a bearded vulture in the Alps is definitely not about finding a breeding site. This huge raptor ranges over immense territories, uses cliffs and major relief for nesting, and flies over vast open areas in search of food. For the observer, the right mental model is therefore not “which nest should I target?” but “in which broad, documented territory do I have a coherent chance of naturally encountering a bird in flight?”.
Several Alpine regions now have strong, recent documentation. In Savoie, Vanoise National Park announced in August 2026 that seven young birds had fledged from eleven breeding pairs, including five young in Vanoise. In Haute-Savoie, Asters-CEN74 coordinates the national action plan in the French Alps, at the heart of a historic reintroduction area. In the Southern Alps, Mercantour documents a current nucleus of five pairs. In Switzerland, the Pro Bartgeier Foundation cites Engadine and Valais among the major regions where observers regularly look for the species.
This presence is entirely compatible with a highly uncertain encounter. A bearded vulture can cross a mountainside, disappear behind a ridge or travel through a massif without ever passing the same place again during your outing. The best preparation therefore relies on long observation windows, reading the sky and terrain, and strict discipline around sensitive areas.
For photography, the strongest scenes are not necessarily the closest: a tiny bearded vulture in a vast mountainside, a ridge crossing, the silhouette of its long wedge-shaped tail, or natural bone-carrying behaviour tell the story of the species better than proximity achieved at the cost of disturbance. This table is not a ranking of “chances”. A well-documented breeding population, an international survey day or a recent observation does not provide an individual probability of encounter. Territories are selected because they genuinely change preparation, landscape reading or the rules to follow.
Recognising the bearded vulture without looking for a nest
The bearded vulture is one of Europe’s largest raptors. Mercantour National Park gives a wingspan of about 2.80 metres. Its wings look long and slimmer than those of other large vultures, and its elongated wedge-shaped tail is an especially useful feature when it passes overhead.
Adults have a pale to orange head and breast, while the wings show a darker contrast. Juveniles and immatures are generally browner and darker. At long distance, this interpretation should remain cautious: a silhouette seen for only a few seconds does not deserve an overly precise age determination if light or angle do not allow it.
The right reflex is therefore to use visible features to confirm the species, not to reduce the distance. A large raptor moving along a cliff or disappearing behind a ridge must remain free to continue its route. Identification comes after observation; it never justifies approaching a cliff.
Read the terrain and the flight rather than looking for a fixed point
The bearded vulture is a high-mountain bird associated with cliffs for breeding, but its range extends far beyond the cliff where it nests. Mercantour describes pair territories that can cover very large areas, including cliffs, pastures and scree where the bird finds food. This scale completely changes the photographic approach.
In the field, start by reading the lines of the terrain: ridges, broad slopes, open valleys, cliffs seen from a distance and places where the sky remains widely visible. The bearded vulture patrols its territory and uses air currents to move. A slope or ridge can therefore structure your composition before a bird even appears.
This reading must not become nest detection by deduction. A favourable cliff remains part of the landscape, not a clue to exploit. If local regulations, a sensitivity zone or a sign imposes distance, a detour or a closure, the composition must be built from the authorised location.
When should you observe bearded vultures without disturbing breeding?
The bearded vulture is present all year in the Alps, but no universal time guarantees a flyover. Official survey operations themselves rely on long observation periods. For a photographer, this patience is more robust than any supposedly “magic” hour.
Autumn and early winter: breeding has already restarted
Courtship and nest preparation begin as early as November and December. A winter outing must therefore never assume that cliffs are “quiet” by default. Local sensitivity information becomes the priority.
Winter: laying and incubation
Mercantour generally places egg laying in January, followed by around two months of incubation. This is a phase where the cost of disturbance can be disproportionate. The photographic objective must remain flight observed at distance, not activity around a cliff.
Spring: raising the chick
The young bird remains in the nest for several months before fledging. At this time, following an adult’s movements to “understand where it goes” would be exactly the wrong reflex. Give up any approach that could reveal or disturb the site.
Summer: fledging does not immediately remove sensitivity
Fledging can range from late June to mid-August depending on the pair. A recently fledged young bird remains dependent on its parents for a time. The presence of an inexperienced bird therefore justifies neither approaching nor pursuing it.
Wandering juveniles: understand mobility
After independence, some young birds travel very large distances before settling. GPS monitoring shows this spectacular mobility. It exists to understand the species, not to predict an appointment with a tracked individual.
During the day: prioritise patience
Bearded vultures can fly in varied conditions. Relief and air currents affect their movements, but no simple hourly rule replaces calm, long observation of the sky.
Why is it called the “bone breaker”?
The bearded vulture occupies an exceptional feeding niche. It mainly eats bones and can swallow fragments whole thanks to a highly specialised digestive system. When a bone is too large, the bird can carry it and drop it onto scree to break it before retrieving the pieces.
This behaviour is spectacular, but it must never become a scene to manufacture. Placing a carcass, moving a bone or waiting at a known bone-breaking site would alter the natural relationship between bird and environment. Photography is relevant here only if the behaviour happens spontaneously during an already respectful observation.
For the image, keeping part of the terrain can be stronger than searching for a tight frame. The action makes complete sense when the bird, the bone and the mineral landscape are visible enough to explain this unique behaviour.
Which photographic scenes should you look for naturally?
The bearded vulture is particularly suited to environmental wildlife photography. Its impressive size does not require filling the frame: the relationship between the raptor, sky and mountain is part of the subject. Proximity should never become the main criterion for success.
The bearded vulture in the wider landscape
A relatively small bird above a valley or vast mountainside immediately restores the scale of its territory. This scene works particularly well when terrain lines guide the eye.
The ridge crossing
A silhouette appearing above a ridge and disappearing a few seconds later tells the story of movement without requiring proximity. The wedge-shaped tail and long wings can be enough to give the image a strong identity.
Silhouette and backlight
When plumage is difficult to read, flight shape can take over. A graphic silhouette remains an aesthetic scene, however; identification should stay cautious if distinctive features are not visible enough.
Adult or juvenile, only if the reading is certain
The contrast of adult plumage and the darker tones of young birds can enrich the story. Avoid turning a distant photograph into an overly precise age or sex diagnosis.
Carrying or breaking a bone
This is one of the species’ most iconic behaviours. Photograph it only if it occurs naturally; place nothing, move nothing and do not seek a “bone-breaking site” to provoke the scene.
Observation from a fixed point
Staying still and letting the bird choose its distance often produces the best ethical situation. If it moves away behind a ridge, the scene is over: pursuit does not improve the photograph, it changes behaviour.

Which territory should you choose for your project?
For the most current monitoring: Vanoise / Savoie
The 2026 data provide very fresh context on breeding and fledged young. This is also the territory where sensitivity zones most clearly show that good observation begins by accepting constraints.
To understand the history of the French return: Haute-Savoie
Haute-Savoie is intimately linked to Alpine reintroduction and the current national action plan. Conservation matters here just as much as photographing the raptor.
For the Southern Alps: Mercantour
Mercantour combines a current nucleus, a reintroduction history and highly recognisable southern relief. The Park also provides a strong natural-history framework on the cycle, diet and protection.
For the eastern Swiss Alps: Engadine
The Pro Bartgeier Foundation cites Engadine as a major observation region. The context is well suited to long-distance practice centred on reading the sky and inner-Alpine relief.
To complement it with western Switzerland: Valais
Valais is also cited in Swiss survey operations. It complements Engadine without justifying a second catalogue of precise sites here.
Vanoise and Savoie — highly documented presence, therefore high responsibility
Vanoise National Park published an especially useful update in August 2026: seven young bearded vultures fledged in Savoie from eleven breeding pairs, including five young within Vanoise National Park. This number is not used here to promise an observation; above all, it shows that the species is now closely monitored at territorial scale.
Vanoise also documents Major Sensitivity Zones activated around breeding sites. They can apply for much of the year, from nest preparation through fledging. For a photographer, this information is more valuable than a list of places: it shows where freedom of movement must deliberately stop.
Photographically, Vanoise lends itself to a broad scale: high valleys, ridges, open slopes and enough sky to integrate the raptor into its environment. A very distant pass can be a successful image if the landscape tells the mountain story rather than being removed by extreme cropping.

Haute-Savoie — one of the founding territories of the bearded vulture’s return
Asters-CEN Haute-Savoie currently coordinates the Bearded Vulture National Action Plan in the French Alps. The organisation reported thirty breeding pairs in the French Alps in 2025. Haute-Savoie also occupies a major historical place in the reintroduction, particularly around the Bargy massif, one of the pioneering territories of the species’ return.
This history must not be confused with an observation address. Mentioning Bargy helps explain reintroduction and conservation; it gives no implicit permission to look for a nest, follow a cliff or approach a site that is currently sensitive.
The Northern Alpine context does provide a strong photographic signature: limestone cliffs, ridges and broad slopes. The right image remains one of a bird encountered in this environment at the distance imposed by the scene.
Mercantour and the Southern Alps — the bearded vulture in southern relief
Mercantour National Park indicates that a nucleus of five pairs is currently established in the Southern Alps. The massif has been part of the reintroduction story since the 1990s together with the Italian Alpi Marittime. This cross-border continuity gives the territory particularly strong natural-history depth.
Mercantour describes the bearded vulture as a high-mountain raptor able to range across large territories, using cliffs, pastures, scree and broad slopes. Southern relief and sunny slopes can produce very different flight scenes from those in the Northern Alps.
The official page also publishes very detailed monitoring information. It is valuable for conservation, but AAM does not repeat it as routes. A responsible photography guide stays at Park and Southern Alps scale without turning known pairs or GPS tracks into appointments.
Engadine and Graubünden — observe at the scale of a broad Alpine region
The Pro Bartgeier Foundation organises international observation days each year and cites Engadine among the Swiss regions where observations are particularly sought. This information is useful precisely because it remains at the right scale: an entire Alpine region, not a rock or nest.
Engadine is also part of the history of Swiss reintroduction. For the photographer, this translates into patience: choose an authorised point offering a broad view of the sky, scan relief with binoculars and accept that a bearded vulture may remain very far away.
A silhouette in a high valley, a crossing from one slope to another or a bird following a ridge line already tells the full story of the species. You do not need to know the location of a breeding pair to make a strong image.

Valais — a strong complement for the western Swiss Alps
Valais is also cited by Pro Bartgeier in its survey operations. The region provides a western reading of the Swiss Alps, with broad valleys and high relief suited to long-distance observation.
This guide deliberately treats it more compactly than Engadine. Multiplying Swiss sub-regions would add little value and increase the risk of drifting into a list of “good spots”. The useful scale remains: choose a broad documented region, observe widely and follow local regulations.
Hohe Tauern and Écrins — two useful references without forcing a “where to see” section
Hohe Tauern occupies a founding place in Alpine history: the first release in the international reintroduction programme took place there in 1986. This information is essential to understanding the bearded vulture’s return across the Alpine arc. In this project, however, it is not enough to create an observation section as strong as Vanoise, Haute-Savoie, Mercantour or Switzerland.
Écrins illustrates another phenomenon: mobility. Birds tracked from other massifs can pass through during long movements. Here again, the editorial value lies in showing that an individual can cross several territories, not in turning a track or isolated observation into a new spot.
Not filling the map artificially is a deliberate decision. A territory becomes a chapter only when it brings current evidence and a useful difference to the reader’s preparation.
