Weather | Photographing Thunderstorms
A thunderstorm is not spectacular light to which you then try to add enough caution so you can stay outside. The order must be the opposite: first determine whether the situation still allows outdoor activity, reach or remain in a recognized safe shelter when lightning threatens, and only consider making an image once that condition is satisfied.
A good photographic decision may therefore be to put the equipment away, leave the viewpoint, not go out, or wait in shelter. That is not a failed session: it is the normal consequence of a phenomenon Météo-France describes as potentially dangerous, sudden, and associated with lightning, intense rain, gusts and sometimes hail.
When photography is genuinely compatible with the situation — for example a convective atmosphere observed outside an active lightning threat, or a photograph that can be made without compromising a recognized safe shelter — this guide then covers cloud structure, rain curtains, localized light and the possible capture of lightning. Safety remains the gate that can interrupt any section.
The National Weather Service considers audible thunder to mean lightning is close enough to strike: immediately move to safe shelter.
Calculating distance from the flash and thunder is not used here to authorize photography. If thunder is audible, the decision has already been made.
Cumulonimbus, a dark front, rain curtains, localized light and the relationship with the terrain can be enough to build a strong photograph.
Tripod, telephoto lens, trigger, rain cover or remote control are photographic tools. None turns a dangerous outdoor position into an acceptable one.
1. The safety gate: first decide whether photography still has a place
Météo-France notes that a thunderstorm can be dangerous at a given location because of the power and random nature of its phenomena. In the mountains, summits and ridges are among the positions explicitly to avoid when lightning threatens.
The National Weather Service gives a particularly simple criterion: if you hear thunder, immediately move to safe shelter. It states that no outdoor place is safe when a thunderstorm is in the area. This rule is more robust than reasoning such as “the storm still looks far away” or “it is not raining above me.”
Vigilance complements the forecast; it does not become photographic permission
Météo-France Vigilance is intended to signal potential hazards and communicate appropriate precautions. In France, its current information and instructions take precedence over a generic rule found in a photography guide.
Since September 2026, Météo-France can also specify at a sub-departmental scale the sectors most affected by several phenomena, including thunderstorms. This reinforces a simple idea: the real status of the area and current instructions must be checked again; they cannot be frozen into an evergreen page.
Do not wait for the first “close” strike
The danger does not need to begin with a spectacular strike in front of the camera. Audible thunder is already enough for the NWS to require shelter. Waiting for the first visible strike, the start of rain or a subjective sense of proximity delays the decision precisely when official guidance says not to.
When can outdoor activity resume?
The National Weather Service recommends remaining in safe shelter for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activity. This delay is retained here because it is an explicit current recommendation from that authority, not a distance or a calculation of “lightning safety.”
In France, continue to follow current Vigilance and local instructions at the same time: the end of thunder does not remove other possible hazards such as strong wind, runoff, hail or degraded access.
2. A recognized safe shelter is not automatically a photo spot
Météo-France states that a substantial building is the best way to protect yourself. The National Weather Service recognizes as shelter a substantial building with electricity or plumbing, or, when such a building is unavailable, an enclosed metal-roofed vehicle with the windows up.
Building: being indoors does not authorize every position
Once inside a building, the NWS says to stay away from windows and exterior doors, plumbing, corded phones and electrical equipment directly connected to the mains. It would therefore be contradictory to turn a large open window, terrace, porch or open garage into a “protected photo position.”
The photographic rule is deliberately restrictive: if the image requires leaving the shelter, moving close to an opening or using equipment in a way that conflicts with indoor safety guidance, do not make the image.
Vehicle: possible shelter, never an invitation to drive toward the storm
The NWS considers an enclosed metal-roofed vehicle with the windows up to provide protection when a substantial building is unavailable. This role as shelter does not mean the car becomes a storm-chasing vehicle.
In France, Météo-France recommends not using a vehicle under red Thunderstorm Vigilance. The two statements do not conflict: one describes a possible type of shelter for someone already facing lightning; the other advises against travel in a red-warning situation. Do not drive toward the phenomenon to gain an angle or distance.
If an enclosed metal-roofed vehicle is already your shelter in accordance with NWS recommendations, any possible photograph must preserve those exact conditions: windows up, nobody outside and no movement toward the phenomenon to improve the frame. If the camera cannot be used that way, there is no photograph.
What is not photographic shelter
The NWS excludes small open shelters, pavilions, tents and similar structures as lightning protection. It also says not to shelter under an isolated tree, under a rock overhang, on a ridge or near water when lightning threatens.
Last-resort recommendations must never be turned into a list of “good places” to photograph. If you are already outdoors without recognized safe shelter, the objective is to reach a safer situation, not to find the best frame from the least-bad available position.
3. A thunderstorm photograph does not need to show lightning
Reducing thunderstorms to lightning creates a dangerous bias: you end up waiting for the most spectacular event. Yet a thunderstorm already has a strong visual identity before lightning enters the frame.
Cloud structure provides scale
The cumulonimbus cloud associated with thunderstorms can form a mass far larger than the terrain. A relatively small mountain beneath an immense sky makes that disproportion readable without showing a strike.
The dark base, lighter zones, precipitation curtains and changes in texture can also build several layers in the sky. This guide does not need to teach full convective meteorology: it is enough to identify what is visually distinct.
A rain curtain can become a plane
Visible precipitation in the distance can hide a valley or part of the massif and create separation between a sharp area and an erased one. It can also reveal the direction in which the system is moving.
If that curtain is rapidly reaching your position or is accompanied by thunder, the decision is not to wait for it to enter the composition perfectly: return to the safety gate.
A break in the light can isolate the terrain
A thunderstorm can leave part of the landscape in direct light while the rest remains under cloud or precipitation. A small illuminated area can then become visually more important than the cloud mass itself.
The physics of that light — direct, diffuse, atmosphere and contrast — belongs to Understanding Light in Mountain Photography. Here, you simply use it as information that can appear or disappear very quickly.
4. Applied composition: give the phenomenon a place without aiming for the strike
Terrain and cloud mass: choose which gives scale to the other
If the sky structure is the subject, give it enough space for its size and direction to be understood. A small mountain can then provide scale. If the terrain remains the main subject, reduce the amount of sky that does not contribute to the image.
Use the rain curtain as separation
A band of precipitation can cut the landscape in two, erase a background or isolate a brighter ridge. Use that boundary as a mass or dividing line, not as texture to be automatically “corrected.”
Lightning immediately becomes a dominant line
When lightning enters the image, its contrast and shape almost always attract the eye. The rest of the frame therefore still needs to exist: terrain, city, ridge or cloud mass must provide scale and context.
Do not build the framing around an “expected strike point.” The precise location is not predictable at photographic scale, and trying to position yourself for supposed proximity reverses the order safety → image.
Beautiful structure does not mean composition is finished
A dramatic sky can fill the screen and leave the mountain with no hierarchy. Check the relationship between the phenomenon and the terrain again: ridgeline, depth, illuminated area, rain curtain, empty space. As soon as the question becomes purely about masses, lines and balance, the Composition guide takes over.
5. Photographing lightning: only after the safety gate
Lightning is brief and unpredictable. The photographic problem is therefore not to “press the shutter fast enough” by hand every time, but to choose a capture method suited to ambient light and the frequency of activity — without requiring that method to keep you exposed.
Isolated lightning or repeated activity: the capture strategy changes
If activity is highly irregular, waiting for a perfect manual trigger has little chance of working. Repeated capture, an intervalometer, a pre-release function available on some cameras, or a specialized optical trigger can increase the chance of recording the event.
These tools neither detect nor reduce the danger. They only make sense if the camera can be used from a situation compatible with the safety gate. A “lightning” trigger is never protective equipment. Likewise, remote control does not make a camera placed outside safe if setting it up, monitoring it or retrieving it exposes you: the remote does not replace shelter.
Daytime: ambient light limits the duration
In full daylight, the sky and landscape accumulate a lot of light very quickly. A very long exposure may therefore be limited by ambient light before lightning even appears. Repeated shorter exposures, a pre-release mode or a specialized trigger may be more practical depending on the camera.
There is no “daytime lightning” shutter speed, aperture or ISO. The real scene, sky brightness and camera capability decide.
At twilight: the method can change quickly
As ambient light falls, a longer duration becomes possible. But twilight changes quickly: an exposure that was correct a few minutes earlier can become too dark for the terrain or too bright for a cloud illuminated from within.
Recheck the file when a new phase begins rather than repeating the same sequence mechanically.
At night: the exposure can wait for the event, but it also accumulates everything else
A longer exposure can leave the sensor open while lightning occurs. It also accumulates the brightness of clouds, a city, a hut or other sources. An exposure that is too long can therefore saturate the ambient scene before improving the lightning.
If several lightning events occur during the same exposure, they can all be recorded and create a much denser image than expected. That is neither automatically better nor automatically wrong: check whether the superposition remains readable.

Lightning can clip before the rest of the scene
A very bright channel can saturate while the landscape still looks dark. After recording lightning, check the important highlights and channels rather than judging only from the rear screen.
If the lightning is heavily clipped, reduce exposure on the next attempt using the variable that best fits your intention. Detailed histogram, channel and exposure-setting behavior belongs to Exposure in Mountain Photography.
6. Exposure and focus: apply the fundamentals to a changing scene
Sky and terrain can evolve independently
A break can light a ridge while the cloud stays dark; intracloud lightning can suddenly illuminate a mass that was almost black. As soon as an important element changes luminance, check the file again.
Bracketing can be relevant for a static scene whose dynamic range genuinely exceeds what you want to retain. It is not a thunderstorm recipe and obviously does not guarantee capturing the same lightning event across multiple frames.
Low light: give autofocus a usable detail
A uniform cloud mass may offer little contrast to autofocus. If distant terrain is part of the image, a ridge or distant light can provide a more stable point of control.
If AF hesitates, focus on a contrasting element at the useful distance, check the result visually and switch to manual if it makes the sequence simpler. Do not replace this check with “set the lens to infinity”: behavior depends on the lens and subject. The theory remains in the Sharpness guide.
Processing must not manufacture danger that was not present in the scene
A convective sky already contains strong luminance and color breaks. Systematically pushing contrast, saturation or dehaze can crush transitions and turn the terrain into a black mass. Preserve the hierarchy actually observed; the RAW development workflow remains in its dedicated guide.
7. Rain and equipment: the cover never changes the safety gate
A shower can leave drops on the front element, reduce contrast and slow handling. A suitable cover, lens hood and dry cloth remain the simple tools described in the parent weather guide.
But during a lightning threat, perfectly protecting the camera is not the priority. If reaching shelter requires abandoning a shot, tripod or unfinished protective step, the photography → equipment sequence must not delay safety.
Avoid exposed lens changes
Rain and gusts increase the chance of introducing water or dust during a lens change. If the situation is photographable, simplify the kit and limit openings of the system. If it is no longer photographable, pack only insofar as doing so does not delay shelter.
A wet lens is a file defect, not a reason to prolong the session
Halos, soft areas and reflections can come from a single drop. Check the lens when you are in a situation where that handling is compatible with safety. Do not go back outside solely to obtain a “clean” front element.
8. Myths to remove before they influence a decision
