Photographing mountain animals is not just about having a long focal length. The difficulty comes from the whole: finding a subject without pursuing it, anticipating its movement, maintaining sufficient speed when light decreases, isolating the eye despite rocks or grasses, and maintaining a composition that truly tells the story of the mountains.
An ibex can remain still for several minutes then abruptly change position. A chamois can cross a slope in a few seconds. A marmot can disappear into its burrow at the first too-fast movement. Settings must therefore be ready before the encounter. The photographer must be able to switch from a calm portrait to a quick action without searching through menus.
Technical quality remains important, especially when a photograph is intended for large-format printing. But it comes after a simple rule: the animal must maintain its natural behavior. An image obtained by scaring it away, blocking its path, or forcing it to leave a resting area is not a success.

The priority before settings: understanding behavior
Wildlife photography begins before taking out the camera. Observing for a few minutes allows understanding if the animal is feeding, resting, watching for danger, protecting a young, or preparing to move. This insight avoids moving at the wrong time and directly improves the images.
A calm animal does not necessarily mean it is indifferent. An ibex may tolerate a presence while watching every movement. A chamois that keeps its head high, turns its ears towards you, or stops grazing is already alert. A standing marmot does not always offer a "photogenic" posture: it may be assessing a threat.
Good behavior involves slowing down, staying on a predictable path, and avoiding a frontal approach. If the animal is near the trail, let it decide the distance. Do not try to gain a few meters to fill the frame more: use the focal length, crop reasonably, or compose a wider image.
⚠️ The signal to make you back off
If the animal interrupts its activity, stares at you for a long time, suddenly straightens up, gathers its young, changes direction, or moves to avoid you, the distance is insufficient. Stop advancing and calmly retreat.
Preparing for a wildlife photography outing in the mountains
A wildlife outing is more effective when prepared like a mountain outing, not just a photo session. You need to know the itinerary, weather, snow conditions, timings, regulations, and sensitive areas. The presence of a species in a mountain range never guarantees an encounter.
Choosing an intention before leaving
Determine the type of image sought: portrait, silhouette, animal in its environment, family group, movement scene, or behavior. This intention influences the focal length, location, and departure time. A 200–600 mm is suitable for distant observation; a 70–200 mm is often stronger for showing the animal in the landscape.
Scouting without turning wildlife into a "spot"
Maps, park guides, tracks, and signs of presence are more useful than a coordinate published on social media. Look for favorable habitats, then observe from a distance with binoculars. Avoid exact locations of breeding areas, burrows, resting places, or wintering zones.
Preparing the camera before the encounter
The lens cap removed, the correct battery in place, the memory card available, and the main settings already configured: these details often make the difference. An encounter can last a few seconds. The first image must be possible immediately, before any search for perfection.
Anticipating cold and waiting
Wildlife is often active early in the morning, late in the day, or in cool conditions. Cold reduces battery life and finger mobility. A warm layer, thin gloves compatible with controls, a rain cover, and a battery kept close to the body significantly increase the success rate.
What equipment to choose for photographing mountain animals?
The camera body
A recent camera body facilitates tracking thanks to continuous autofocus, animal eye detection, and good high ISO performance. But the photographer's behavior remains more important than the spec sheet. An APS-C camera can even be advantageous for giving more apparent reach to a light focal length.
The truly useful criteria are responsiveness, autofocus quality, controllable burst mode, sufficient buffer memory, good battery life, and controls accessible with gloves. Weather sealing is appreciated in case of snow, humidity, or dust.
Binoculars
A pair of 8x or 10x binoculars is one of the best investments. They allow you to search for animals without continually lifting a heavy telephoto lens, confirm a species, and read its behavior before positioning yourself. They also reduce unnecessary movement.
Monopod or tripod
A monopod relieves a heavy lens while maintaining mobility. A tripod is useful for long waits, distant scenes, and video. For mobile mammals, we often prefer to shoot handheld or with a monopod to quickly adjust the framing.
Truly useful accessories
- Second battery: essential in cold weather and with intensive autofocus use.
- Fast cards: to prevent the buffer memory from blocking at the important moment.
- Rain cover: simple and lightweight, it protects the camera in a shower or wet snow.
- Microfiber cloth: useful against drops, condensation, and splashes.
- Lens hood: limits stray light and protects the front element.
- Headlamp: for departures before dawn and returns after sunset.
- Neutral clothing: full camouflage is not essential; discreet movements matter more.
- Offline map: observation should never make you forget the itinerary and return time.

The longest focal length is not always the best. A lens that is too tight cuts off legs, horns, or the direction of movement and makes the mountain disappear. The 100–400 mm often remains the most balanced choice for a day's hike.

Start with a wider image that secures the scene and the environment. Then zoom in if the animal remains calm. This method avoids losing the only useful photograph because the focal length was too long from the start.
Quick camera setup
A simple configuration allows you to react without constantly changing modes. The most versatile setting is manual mode with auto ISO: you set the necessary shutter speed for movement and the desired aperture, while the camera adjusts the ISO within the defined limit.
- Format: RAW, or RAW + JPEG if you need an immediate preview.
- Exposure mode: manual + auto ISO; shutter priority if you're a beginner.
- Autofocus: AF-C / Continuous Servo.
- Detection: animal subject and animal eye if the camera handles it correctly.
- AF zone: wide tracking for a clear animal, reduced zone if the scenery interferes with autofocus.
- Burst mode: medium or fast depending on the action; avoid shooting continuously.
- Metering: matrix or evaluative, controlled with the histogram and highlight alerts.
- Stabilization: activated handheld; adapt it to your equipment's recommendations on a tripod.
- Silent shutter: useful for discretion, but test it on fast movements to avoid certain distortions.
If possible, assign ISO, AF zone mode, and subject detection to direct buttons. Wildlife photography becomes much smoother when the main settings are accessible without taking your eye off the viewfinder.
What shutter speed to use depending on the animal and its movement?
The shutter speed must first freeze the subject's movement. The inverse focal length rule limits camera shake, but it's not enough when a chamois is running or a bird is flapping its wings. The following values are starting points to be adapted to distance, animal size, and the desired effect.

A slightly noisy but sharp image is generally more usable than a clean, blurry file. Don't be afraid to go up to ISO 3200, 6400, or even higher when the light demands it. The acceptable level depends on the camera body, print size, and exposure quality.
Aperture, ISO, and Exposure
Choosing the Aperture
At long focal lengths, the depth of field becomes shallow. A wide aperture isolates a portrait well but can make a group partially blurry. For a single animal in profile, f/5.6 or f/6.3 often works. For multiple subjects spread across different planes, f/8 or f/11 may become necessary if light permits.
Closing down further does not guarantee that the entire group will be sharp: the distance between the animals matters as much as the aperture. Try to position yourself to align the heads on a similar plane.
Using Auto ISO
Auto ISO is particularly effective in manual mode. You maintain a safe shutter speed and consistent aperture as the light changes. Set a realistic maximum limit rather than a value that is too low, which would force the camera to underexpose.
Exposing for Useful Highlights
Light fur, snow, and bright areas can quickly blow out. Activate the histogram and overexposure alerts. Do not systematically underexpose: very dark shadows recovered in post-processing produce more noise than a proper exposure.
Exposure Compensation
With Auto ISO, exposure compensation remains accessible on many camera bodies. It is useful when facing snow, a clear sky, or backlighting. Adjust based on the histogram rather than a memorized value.
Autofocus, Eye Detection, and Burst Mode
Continuous Autofocus
AF-C or Continuous Servo should be the default setting. Even an animal that appears still will move its head, breathe, or slightly shift its weight. Continuous autofocus corrects the distance until the shutter is released.
Animal Eye Detection
Eye detection is very useful when the head is clear. However, it can be mistaken by a horn, a high-contrast rock, or a partially obscured animal. Check the focus point in the viewfinder and keep a classic AF area quickly accessible.
Choosing the AF Area
- Isolated subject on a uniform background: Wide tracking with subject detection.
- Animal among branches or rocks: Medium zone or small focus point placed on the head.
- Bird in flight: Wide zone to facilitate acquisition.
- Group: Choose the main animal or a head located in the front third of the group.
Useful Burst Mode
Burst mode increases the chances of capturing a paw position, a glance, or an interaction. It does not replace anticipation. Work in short sequences: three to eight images at the relevant moment, then release. This saves battery, buffer memory, and culling time.
💡 Sharpness Tip
After a first series, quickly zoom in on the eye at 100%. If the images are slightly soft, increase the shutter speed before questioning the lens or autofocus. Subtle head movement is a common cause.
Photographing Animals in Snow
Snow simplifies compositions and highlights an animal very well, but it can easily trick the light meter. The camera often tries to bring the white towards a middle gray, which produces a dark image and blocked-up fur.
A positive exposure compensation is often necessary, frequently around +2/3 to +1 2/3 EV depending on the light and the amount of snow in the frame. This range is not a rule: check the histogram and highlights on the fur.
Snow can also create a blue cast in the shade. Shoot in RAW to adjust the white balance without destroying the ambiance. A too neutral rendering sometimes removes the feeling of cold; excessive blue makes the scene artificial.
Finally, snow imposes additional ethical vigilance. In winter, animals conserve their energy, and each flight costs them more. A longer focal length and greater distance take precedence over seeking a close-up.

Light, Weather, and Background
Morning and Late Afternoon
Grazing light reveals fur, horns, and terrain texture. It also creates long shadows that structure the mountain. Animals are often more active during cooler hours, but these periods require higher ISO to maintain a sufficient shutter speed.
Overcast Weather
An overcast sky is excellent for animal portraits. Diffused light reduces harsh shadows, balances the fur, and simplifies exposure. Look for a simple background or a splash of color in the grass, rocks, or larch trees.
Backlighting
Backlighting can highlight horns and create a halo around the fur. Expose according to your intention: a deliberate silhouette, or preserved detail in the animal. Avoid a compromise gray where neither the sky nor the subject is truly controlled.
Mist, Snow, and Light Rain
Challenging conditions often yield the most atmospheric images. Mist separates planes, snow simplifies the scenery, and rain adds texture to the fur. Protect your equipment and regularly check the front lens element.
Care for the Background
Before shooting, look behind the animal: a branch crossing the head, a bright rock clinging to the horns, a horizon cutting the neck, a too-strong bright spot. A lateral step or a few centimeters of height can improve the image without reducing the distance.
Composing a Portrait or Environmental Scene
Tight Portrait
The portrait emphasizes the gaze, horns, whiskers, or fur detail. Sharpness of the closest eye becomes a priority. Leave a little space in front of the muzzle and avoid accidentally cropping joints or horn tips.
Animal in its Environment
A wider scene tells the story of altitude, terrain exposure, season, and the relationship between the species and its habitat. An ibex in front of a glacier, a chamois on a ridge, or a marmot near its burrow becomes more than just a portrait.
Getting to Eye Level
When the terrain allows, without leaving the trail or disturbing the animal, an angle close to eye level creates more presence. Consistently shooting from above flattens the subject and shows too much ground.
Leaving Space in the Direction of Movement
An animal looking or moving to the right generally needs space on the right. This breathing gives direction to the image. A deliberately tight composition can work, but it should appear chosen rather than accidental.
Composing a Group
In a herd or family, look for a clear separation between heads. Wait for the silhouettes not to overlap completely and monitor the edges of the frame. A slightly closed aperture helps, but placement remains essential.

Settings by Species and Situation
Ibex
Ibex often allow calm work, but their head movements can be fast. Start around 1/800 s, continuous AF, and f/5.6 to f/8. Take advantage of their presence on rocks to build an environmental image rather than approaching for a portrait.
Chamois
Chamois are more nervous and change direction quickly. A speed of 1/1250 to 1/2000 s is a safer base. Keep a fairly wide AF area and prepare the framing before they cross a ridge. A long focal length helps maintain a true distance.
Marmots
Marmots alternate between stillness, short movements, and rapid head movements. A speed of 1/800 to 1/1250 s secures portraits. Place the focus point on the eye and avoid blocking access to the burrow. Never feed the animal to get a pose.
Deer and Foxes
They often appear in low light. Open the lens, accept an ISO increase, and set an appropriate minimum shutter speed: about 1/640 s for a calm animal, more if it is walking or running. Silence and stillness are more effective than an approach.
Raptors and Mountain Birds
For a bird in flight, start around 1/2500 s, continuous AF, wide area, and fast burst. Clear skies facilitate acquisition; in front of a rock face, tracking can latch onto the background. Anticipate the subject entering the frame and avoid cropping too tightly.

The separation between the silhouettes allows the animals to be identified. The contrast between the dark foreground and the glaciers creates a graphic scene where the family remains linked to its territory.
Photographing animals without disturbing them
The correct distance is not a universal number. It depends on the species, terrain, season, presence of young, and possible habituation. The animal's behavior remains the best indicator.
- Never feed: food alters behaviors, creates habituation, and can make animals dependent or aggressive.
- Do not chase: an animal moving away has already requested distance.
- Do not block a path: allow access to the burrow, cliff, group, or escape zone.
- Do not stand between a young animal and its mother: back away immediately if you find yourself in this situation.
- Avoid shouts and calls: do not whistle or imitate a cry to get a look.
- Respect quiet zones: these are particularly important in winter and during reproduction.
- Remain discreet: slow movements, low voice, silent phone, and reasonable bursts.
- Keep dogs under control: their presence is prohibited in certain core park areas and highly disruptive elsewhere.
- Do not share sensitive locations: avoid real-time geolocation of a burrow, breeding ground, or vulnerable group.
- Give up the shot: if the situation becomes ambiguous, the right choice is to leave.

Regulations and protected areas
Rules vary depending on the national park, nature reserve, Natura 2000 site, and municipality. Dogs, drones, bivouacs, off-trail travel, and professional or commercial photography may be prohibited, limited, or subject to authorization.
In certain core national park areas, specialized wildlife photography is subject to strict guidelines: no chasing, baiting, feeding, disruptive hides, or photography during vulnerable periods. A practice authorized on a classic trail does not automatically mean that an extended or commercial setup is permitted.
Before an outing, check the official manager's page: regulations, temporary protection zones, trail closures, dogs, drones, and seasonal instructions. On-site signs take precedence over old information found online.
Post-processing and image selection
Sort by behavior before absolute sharpness
Start by identifying strong attitudes: gaze, interaction, posture, leg separation, silhouette, and relationship to the landscape. Then check the sharpness of the eye and eliminate duplicates. A burst of twenty images should not result in twenty almost identical files in your final selection.
Reduce noise without smoothing fur
Modern noise reduction tools are effective, but too strong a setting turns fur into plastic. Work at 100%, preserve small details around the eyes, and apply sharpness appropriate for the output size.
Crop reasonably
Cropping can strengthen composition, but it should not systematically replace an appropriate focal length. Keep enough definition for the intended use. A photograph intended for a large format print requires particular vigilance regarding noise, sharpness, and artifacts.
Respect natural colors
Fur, rock, snow, and grasses have subtle nuances. Too strong a saturation quickly gives an artificial rendering. Adjust white balance according to the actual light, then locally work on the eye, subject contrast, and separation from the background.
Check for halos
Automatic masks can create a light outline around horns, fur, or wings. Inspect high-contrast edges before export, especially if the image is to be printed.

From encounter to wildlife photo print
Wildlife photography intended for large format must remain strong at multiple distances. From afar, the silhouette and composition must be legible. Up close, the eye, fur, horns, and terrain texture must retain enough detail.
Environmental scenes work particularly well as wall decor: they combine the presence of the animal with an identifiable landscape. Tighter portraits bring more intensity and are suitable for spaces where the print can be observed closely.
