About this image
A young ibex stands on the rocks of Grand Veymont amid a limestone landscape open to the ridges of the Vercors. Its small, still slender silhouette contrasts with the mass of the blocks, giving the scene a presence that is both wild and peaceful. Its short horns form a small curve above the brown coat. Yellow grasses grow between the grey rocks beneath a blue sky that keeps the animal’s profile very clear. In this mountain portrait, differences in texture are enough to animate the foreground: fine fur, flexible grasses and massive blocks share the same space.
The framing stays close to the animal while retaining enough of its surroundings to situate the scene. Browns of the coat, greys of the limestone and blues of the sky form a soft palette, while the rock recalls the species’ steep habitat.
Grand Veymont rises to 2,341 metres and is the highest point of the massif in Isère. It overlooks the Trièves and the Hauts-Plateaux du Vercors nature reserve, where Alpine ibex were reintroduced from the late 1980s.
This photo print of a young ibex on Grand Veymont is made to order on matte aluminium Dibond. The finish reproduces the finesse of the coat, the mineral textures and the natural atmosphere of the Vercors.
