Black and white mountain photo prints: a gallery style for your living room
Share
Do you like clean, bright interiors with a few statement pieces that structure the space? Black & white mountain photo prints are perfect for giving your living room a gallery style : graphic lines, contrasts, textures of snow and rock, all on a crisp, matte finish in Dibond aluminum .
On Alu Art Mountains , I photograph the French and Swiss Alps in black and white, then print these images on Dibond aluminum photo panels, made in France. You can explore the entire collection here: Black and white photos of the French Alps .

Why choose black & white for your living room decor?
Black and white has three major advantages for your living room wall decor :
- Timeless : far removed from colour trends, a black & white painting remains modern for years.
- Graphic : it emphasizes lines, edges, and textures of snow, rock, and ice.
- Easy to integrate : it blends equally well with a Scandinavian wood & white living room as with a minimalist contemporary interior.
In the mountains , black and white works particularly well: snowy ridges, striated glaciers, long shadows at sunset… These scenes become powerful photographic tableaux, structuring a wall above a sofa or in an open space.
Create a gallery style with black & white paintings
To give your living room a gallery style , a few simple rules are all you need:
- Limit the palette : favour black & white + a few touches of wood, linen, grey.
- Align and breathe : leave 4 to 8 cm between each painting, and align them on the same line (top, center or bottom).
- Choose a common thread : a mountain range (Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Vanoise…), a type of subject (ridges, glaciers, animals), or a season (winter).
- Vary the formats : mix a large main painting (60×90 or 70×100 cm) with smaller formats (30×45, 40×60 cm).
The collection dedicated to black & white photo prints of the French Alps was conceived with this in mind: ridge lines, glaciers, cliffs and materials, for a minimalist and elegant decor.
Three black and white living room ideas featuring the Alps
1. Light wood & white living room – Scandinavian style
In a bright living room with a beige or gray sofa and natural wood, black and white paintings create a soft contrast without overwhelming the room. For example, you could combine:
- A large main painting above the sofa, such as "Matterhorn - last light (black & white)" in 60×90 or 70×100 cm.
- Two smaller formats (30×45 or 40×60 cm) of ridges or glaciers, to be placed on either side of the sofa, chosen from the collection Photos French Alps in black & white .

2. Minimalist contemporary living room – ridge lines and glaciers
In a more minimalist living room (white walls, furniture with straight lines, few colors), photos of alpine peaks, glaciers, and cliffs work very well. You could, for example, create a triptych with:
- A graphic image like Aiguille du Midi in black & white (ridges and rock structure).
- A panoramic view of a glacier taken from high altitude.
- An image of a sea of clouds or snow-capped peaks to bring a touch of softness.
The whole thing forms a very graphic black & white framed wall , perfect for a contemporary living room or an open living/dining room space.
3. Small living room or reading nook – a duo or triptych in black & white
If your living room is smaller, or if you simply want to create a reading nook , 2 or 3 paintings will suffice:
- A main painting in 40×60 cm (ridges, textured snow, glacier).
- Two small 30×45 cm pieces, placed slightly offset around them.
The important thing is to maintain consistency in light and textures: for example, three very contrasting winter images, or three views of glaciers in softer light.
Case study: an apartment in Zermatt decorated in black & white
I recently assisted a client with the black and white decor of an apartment in Zermatt , near the Matterhorn. The complete project is detailed in this article: Apartment in Zermatt: black and white decor of the Matterhorn .
In the living room, we chose several black and white paintings of the Matterhorn and the Swiss Alps, including:
- Photographic image – Matterhorn (last light, B&W) : the last light on the summit ridges, very graphic.
- Photo print – Matterhorn Glacier (NB) & mountaineers : a rope team progressing on the glacier, perfect for a living room or hallway wall.

The result: a bright living room, light wood, with black & white paintings that structure the space and immediately bring a chic alpine atmosphere, without falling into the rustic chalet cliché.

Practical tips for installing your black & white boards
To successfully install it in your living room:
- Height : the center of the painting or composition should be around 1.50 m from the ground.
- Above a sofa : leave 20 to 30 cm between the top of the backrest and the bottom of the picture.
- Spacing : between 4 and 8 cm between each picture, remaining consistent across the entire wall.
- Test before drilling : place the frames on the floor or simulate with A3 sheets taped to the wall.
I detail all the steps (markings, drilling, fixing, leveling) on the page How to install an aluminum photo panel .
