In this monochrome version, the last light of day focuses on the upper parts of the Matterhorn. The summit stands out against a uniform sky, while the striated flanks and residual snows create a deep and progressive range of grays. The Matterhorn culminates at 4,478 meters above Zermatt, in the Valais Alps. Its position on the Italian border and the regularity of its pyramid make it a major landmark, visible from many parts of the valley. The black and white isolates the mountain's geometry and further highlights the ridge lines, couloirs, and granite breaks. The lower planes are deliberately kept darker to focus attention on the luminous transition of the summit.
