Mountain Sunsets: Guide & Inspirations in the Alps
Share
Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Vanoise, Écrins, Aravis
In the Alps , I love photographing mountain sunsets : the golden hour sculpts the ridges, the alpenglow lights up the peaks, and the valleys are tinged with colorful mist. In this article, I share my approach to preparing for an outing, my shooting settings, and how I imagine Dibond aluminum printing for a warm wall decoration .
My reading of light: golden hour & alpenglow
I arrive early to identify my ridge lines, a foreground (rocks, larches, lake) and the orientation of the sun. Before the horizon, the golden hour reveals the textures; just after, I stay 20 to 30 minutes to capture the alpenglow , this pink/orange glow that often magnifies the scene. This is often my favorite moment.
My favorite mountain ranges in the French Alps
- Mont-Blanc (Chamonix, Aiguilles Rouges): jagged ridges, glaciers, lenticular clouds.
- Aravis (La Clusaz, Pointe Percée): graphic limestone, grassy slopes, low light.
- Vanoise (Val d'Isère, Tignes, Pralognan): large valleys and glacial domes with golden hues.
- Écrins (La Bérarde, Valgaudemar): raw minerality, intense contrasts at the end of summer.
- Beaufortain & Bauges : reflective lakes, soft lines and pastel skies.

My photo process to enhance a sunset
- Anticipation : I check orientation, weather (high clouds = beautiful colors) and blue hour.
- Exposure : I expose for the highlights to preserve the texture of the sky.
- Focal lengths : I alternate between wide-angle (immersion) and telephoto (isolated peak, atmospheric layers).
- Afterglow : I set it after the official bedtime—the shades are often at their highest.
- Safety : I leave with a headlamp, a warm layer and a controlled return route.
How I imagine the work in interior design
I prefer Dibond aluminum for its clean finish, its flatness and the absence of reflections: perfect in a bright living room or an office. Warm palettes (amber, ochre, magenta) go very well with light wood, off-white and anthracite gray.
- Formats : I like panoramas and widths ≥ 90 cm to restore the scale of the relief.
- Hanging : I center the image about 1.55 m from the floor, or 15–20 cm above the back of a sofa.

- Two planned compositions (wide + tight) and foreground identified.
- Headlamp, charged battery, warm layer for the night return.
