About this image

The Gélas summit dominates a vast expanse of ridges, couloirs, and rocky slopes in the heart of the Mercantour. Its mineral structure stands out above the valleys, in a high-mountain landscape where vegetation becomes sparse as the altitude increases. Two massive rocky rises dominate the scree at the foot of the summit. A snow patch adds a bright surface among the stones beneath the blue sky. The tight framing makes these volumes particularly prominent: fractures in the rock and the slope of the debris reveal the structure of the terrain, from its base to its upper reaches.

The framing emphasizes the scale of the relief rather than an isolated detail. Different ridge lines overlap, shadows deepen the couloirs, and the high-altitude light reveals variations of gray, brown, and blue characteristic of the massif's rocks.

The summit reaches 3,143 meters on the border between France and Italy. It is the highest point in the Parc national du Mercantour and notably overlooks the areas of Madone de Fenestre and the upper Vésubie, in the Alpes-Maritimes.
