This photograph shows the Valette refuge at sunrise in a landscape entirely covered in snow. The chalet occupies the foreground, while the reliefs of the Vanoise stretch across the horizon beneath a pastel sky, between cool blue and orange light. The frosted triangular roof, the door and the staircase make this chalet immediately tangible. Behind its wooden façade, a valley of clouds extends the landscape toward the mountains. The pink horizon meets the clear sky; the small building thus retains a familiar presence amid the snow, facing the far greater depth of the distant relief.

The composition contrasts the warm presence of the building with the vast snow-covered slopes. The lines of the roof, the wind-shaped snow and the succession of ridges give depth to the image, while the emerging light creates a quiet, contemplative atmosphere.

The refuge lies at 2,590 metres above sea level, above Pralognan-la-Vanoise in Savoie. Set on the mountainside in the heart of Vanoise National Park, it is a stage on the Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise and overlooks a particularly isolated high-mountain environment.
