About this image

At Reynisfjara, black sand forms a long shoreline between the white waves of the Atlantic and basalt walls. Volcanic columns, dark pebbles and foam structure a landscape where each element remains distinct despite the reduced palette. An isolated columnar rock occupies the foreground in front of a channel separating it from the beach. Beyond it, black sand leads toward a long cliff and more distant sea stacks. This succession gives the eye a precise route: the geometry of the nearby block, the break of the water and then the depth of the shore to the rocky silhouettes on the horizon.

The framing combines the geometric stability of the columns with the irregular movement of the sea. Contrasts between black, grey and white give the image strong graphic power, while the depth of the beach preserves the scale of the site.

The beach lies near Vík on Iceland’s south coast. Reynisfjall, the relief overlooking it, was formed by subglacial volcanic activity; its layers of tuff, lava and basalt appear directly in the cliffs.

This photograph is offered as a photo print of Reynisfjara black-sand beach, printed to order on matte aluminium Dibond. The finish reproduces the material of the basalt and the texture of the ocean.
