From the Chablais massif, autumn forests and pre-Alpine ridges guide the eye toward Mont-Blanc. The foreground takes on golden, copper and brown tones, while the snow-covered summits appear in cooler light on the horizon. Yellow and green trees frame a valley alternating between meadows and small buildings. These details remain close, while the high white massif appears beyond several mountain layers. The photograph therefore gives a place to the inhabited landscape of the Chablais: vegetation and buildings provide starting points before the eye reaches the distant snow.

The succession of ridges creates progressive depth. Warm colours of the vegetation clearly mark the season, then a bluish atmosphere separates the planes as far as Mont-Blanc, which remains the brightest landmark in the landscape.

Chablais occupies northern Haute-Savoie between Lake Geneva and the great Alpine relief. This position allows the Mont-Blanc massif to be seen from a distance and brings together in a single photograph the wooded pre-Alpine terrain and the high glacial mountains.
