About this image

At Sigöldugljúfur, several waterfalls cascade down dark rock faces before joining a turquoise-hued river. The falls descend at varying heights, amidst moss, volcanic rocks, and mineral slopes, giving the canyon a unique rhythm. A small gravel island divides the turquoise riverbed in the centre of the canyon. Along the sides, mosses accompany the white lines of the falls, while the plateau in the background remains more mineral. This small rise in the water makes the river’s course easy to follow and adds a low shape beneath the vertical waterfalls.

The photograph centres on the colour of the water, which strongly contrasts with the greys and browns of the canyon. The white waterfalls serve as markers on the rock face and visually connect the different levels of the terrain down to the riverbed.

The site is located in the Highlands of Iceland, on the route to Landmannalaugar. The environment combines volcanic terrain, waterways, and vast open landscapes, far from the populated coastal areas.

This photo print of the Sigöldugljúfur waterfalls is printed to order on matte Dibond aluminium. The finish preserves the blues of the water, the details of the falls, the volcanic textures of the canyon, and the depth of the Highlands.
