About this image

This photograph frames the Cervin in close-up at sunset. Low-angle light catches the summit’s ridges and rocky walls, while areas already taken by shadow reinforce its relief and pyramidal silhouette. The left face receives warm light, while the snowy valley at its foot remains in shadow. White lines run across the pyramid and reveal its strata against the clear sky. The close framing conveys the continuity of the mountain, from its lower slopes to the upper ridges, while maintaining a clear contrast between its two dominant tonal values.

The tight framing removes almost every secondary element to focus attention on the mineral material. The warm tones of sunset contrast with the deep blues of the shadowed faces, creating an image that is graphic, powerful and pared back.

Rising to 4,478 metres, the Cervin dominates Zermatt in the canton of Valais. Instantly recognisable in the Alpes valaisannes, this mountain marks the border between Switzerland and Italy and is one of the most emblematic Alpine landscapes.

Photographed by Pierre Thiaville, this photo print of the Cervin in Zermatt is printed to order on matte aluminium Dibond. The finish reproduces the detail of the rock, the evening light and the depth of the summit’s faces.
