The Cirque de Gavarnie forms a vast amphitheatre of superimposed cliffs, traversed by the white line of its great waterfall. The vegetated terraces in the foreground provide a sense of scale to the walls and illustrate the transition between meadows, rocks, and high peaks. Located in the commune of Gavarnie-Gèdre, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, the cirque is part of the Pyrénées National Park and the Pyrénées–Mont Perdu site, a World Heritage Site. Its waterfall reaches 422 meters, making it the highest in mainland France. The photograph captures a complete landscape rather than just a single wall. The sedimentary strata, the steps, the corridors, and the vegetation give the relief exceptional depth, while the waterfall visually connects the top of the cliffs to the bottom of the cirque.
