About this image

Roche d’Olvéra and the Rochers de la Grande Paré structure the landscape around Col du Galibier. Pale ridges, rocky slabs and high-altitude valleys follow one another in a highly mineral composition in which vegetation remains discreet beside the mountain volumes. A winding road crosses the alpine meadows and passes close to a building visible in the foreground. Higher up, the jagged range catches warm light beneath the clouds. The bend and the building provide a scale reference in this ensemble of combes and rock, while recalling the place of the road crossing within the high-altitude landscape.

The photograph emphasizes the geological lines of the area: fractures, rock layers and combes create a precise rhythm. Low-angle light reinforces the shadows and brings out greys, browns and ochres without artificially hardening the landscape.

Galibier connects Savoie with the Hautes-Alpes at 2,642 metres above sea level. This major pass in the French Alps lies between the Cerces and Arves massifs in an environment open to several high-mountain ranges.

Offered as a photo print of Col du Galibier, this panorama is printed to order on matte aluminium Dibond. The finish preserves the details of Roche d’Olvéra, Grande Paré and the surrounding relief.
