Rising to 4,478 meters, the Matterhorn marks the border between Valais and Aosta Valley. Zermatt extends on its Swiss side, while Breuil-Cervinia occupies the Italian side; two very different valleys united around the same mountain. The composition is not limited to a uniform silhouette. Changes in shadow reveal the faces, couloirs, and ridge lines, then the gaze extends to the more distant reliefs that place the summit at the heart of the Alps.
