In a Norwegian fjord, snow-covered mountains surround calm water as the sun descends toward the horizon. Warm colours in the sky continue across the surface, while cooler slopes and darker relief give the scene its depth. On the golden grassy shore, red and pale houses cluster at the foot of a wooded slope. Their presence gives the fjord an inhabited scale and a more vivid contrast in front of the snow-covered mountains. The smooth water separates the two shores while bringing their colours together: the landscape thus connects the nearby small buildings with the great depth of the northern relief.

The composition is based on the reflection and the succession of planes. Gold and pink sunset tones contrast with the blues of the snow, the greys of the rock and the deeper shades of the water without losing the overall softness of the landscape.

The precise location is not attributed beyond Norway: the photograph above all shows the characteristic meeting of sea and mountain that structures fjord landscapes. The slopes plunge directly toward the water and create a confined space sheltered from the broad ocean horizon.
