A ridge line separates two faces of the mountain: on the right, the grassy slope of Grand Arc retains the warm tones of autumn; on the left, the snow-covered side brings a colder white surface. The grassy ridge advances through the centre of the composition before the relief succeeds one another as far as the Mont-Blanc massif visible on the horizon.

This seasonal contrast gives the image its strength. Vegetation colours answer summit greys and distant whites. The line of the relief connects nearby materials to the background of the panorama, while distant ranges separate through increasingly soft shades. Snow and grass remain two distinct surfaces joined by the same ridge line.

Grand Arc lies at the northern end of the Lauzière massif, above the Combe de Savoie. The nearby Lauzière relief structures the foreground; broad views toward Beaufortain, Vanoise and Mont-Blanc extend the perspective. This area of ridges, lakes and high-altitude meadows therefore opens a panorama in which several mountain groups answer one another, from immediate relief to the high ranges on the horizon.
