Lac Blanc lies at the bottom of a wooded cirque beneath the granite walls of the Alsatian Vosges. Its dark water contrasts with the lighter scree and fir forests that descend to the shores. Located in the commune of Orbey, in the Haut-Rhin region, the lake is dominated by Rocher Hans. This relief and the neighboring walls give the site a more abrupt character than the long, rounded ridges often associated with the Vosges massif. The framing is organized around three main elements: water, rock, and forest. The lake appears enclosed, but sufficient openness allows for an understanding of the cirque's shape and the depth of the slopes, without making the scene too closed in.
