About this image

From the heights of the Hohneck, Lac Schiessrothried appears at the bottom of a steep cirque between forest, rocks and high meadows. The plunging view reveals the shape of the water and the succession of slopes descending toward the Munster valley. Rocks and golden grasses overlook the russet forested valley. Below, the small lake remains modest in scale while rays of light pass beneath heavy clouds. The panorama gains its breadth through this relationship of scale: nearby materials are detailed, the body of water appears smaller, and the light travels across the slopes leading toward it.

The framing gives the lake a measured place in order to preserve the scale of the surrounding relief. Forest greens, rocky greys and water blues overlap in layers, while the curves of the cirque naturally guide the eye.

The lake lies at 930 metres above sea level, between the Spitzkoepfe and the foot of the Hohneck. It covers around 5.6 hectares in the Vosges massif and occupies a valley shaped by former glaciers below the 1,363-metre summit.
