About this image

The first light outlines Grande Casse while the valleys remain in shadow. Limestone walls, ridges and glacial areas gradually gain relief, with warm light concentrated on the highest sections. To the left of the snow-covered valley, a sea of clouds opens a pale surface beneath the light pink horizon. Small golden faces stand out among rocky summits. Morning light remains distributed in touches, making it possible to follow the changes in plane: the white floor of the valley leads toward the walls before the clouds broaden the view along one edge of the landscape.

The strength of the image comes from this difference in light between the summit and lower planes. Golden tones remain measured, shadows retain their detail and the composition gives full space to the mountain’s verticality.

Grande Casse rises to 3,855 metres in Vanoise National Park. Dominating Pralognan and Col de la Vanoise, it is the highest summit in Savoie and one of the major mountaineering landmarks of the French Alps.

Made to order on matte aluminium Dibond, this photo print of Grande Casse in the first light reproduces the material of the walls and the finesse of the morning atmosphere. The finish preserves the balance between the warmth of the sky and the coolness of the relief.
