The Mer de Glace occupies the bottom of a vast glacial valley between granite walls and high relief. The ice tongue, moraines and lines carved into the glacier draw a path into the Mont-Blanc massif. Snow and wooded slopes frame this opening, where the scale of the basin matters more than a close-up view of crevasses.
Shades of grey, blue and white describe the ice against darker bands of moraine. These materials give the panorama its depth: forest accompanies the valley sides, then the walls take over around the basin. The moraines also underline the glacier’s evolution and the power of the relief containing it.
The Mer de Glace is formed by the meeting of the Leschaux and Géant glaciers. Considered the largest glacier in France, it is an emblematic landscape of the Chamonix valley. It can be accessed from the Montenvers site above Chamonix; this photograph, however, was taken from the Aiguilles Rouges. The access site and viewpoint therefore play two different roles: one allows visitors to approach the glacier, the other to take in its basin from the neighbouring massif.
Printed to order on matte aluminium Dibond, this photo print of the Mer de Glace in Chamonix reproduces the depth of this major Alpine glacial landscape. The finish preserves mineral textures and the transition from wooded slopes to large ice surfaces.
