About this image

Mont Aiguille rises above the alpine pastures and forests of Trièves like an isolated limestone block. Its vertical walls, summit plateau, and sharply defined silhouette give the photograph an immediately recognizable graphic presence. This Vercors peak stands at 2,087 meters. It is an outlier of the massif's ancient eastern barrier, separated from the plateau by erosion. Its ascent in 1492 is often considered a foundational event in the history of mountaineering. The framing leaves enough space around the monolith to show its isolation. The meadows and woods form a softer base, while the grey tones of the cliff and the shadows of the walls accentuate the verticality of the landscape.
