Night covers Val Thorens while the lights of the resort trace streets, buildings and pistes beneath Aiguille de Péclet. Warm halos contrast with the snow and dark sky, giving the relief a presence that is both urban and alpine. The wooden buildings in the foreground bring the nocturnal landscape closer. Their lit windows echo the blue and yellow areas of the snow-covered slope. At this scale, light allows the eye to move from architecture to the mountain: the warm points of the resort continue across the snow surfaces before the dark sky closes the view.

The long exposure makes the different planes easier to read: illuminated resort at the first level, snow-covered slopes above, then the dark silhouette of the summit. The image thus retains real depth despite the low light and avoids reducing the scene to a simple resort landscape.

Val Thorens lies at 2,300 metres above sea level in the Belleville valley, in the heart of Les Trois Vallées. Aiguille de Péclet, rising to 3,561 metres, dominates this area of glaciers and high passes in the Vanoise massif.
