About this image
The road to the Col d'Izoard crosses the Casse Déserte between immense scree slopes, rocky pinnacles, and vegetation turned russet by autumn. The winding roads add a discreet human presence amidst an almost lunar landscape, whose mineral lines remain the true subject of the photograph. A vehicle on the road provides a sense of scale at the foot of the cliffs. Yellow-orange trees punctuate the rocky slope and in places follow the curves of the terrain. Their colour breaks up the grey continuity of the scree, while the hairpin bends trace a regular line through this fragmented ground: autumn appears here in direct contact with stone.
The Casse Déserte is located on the Queyras side of the pass, above Arvieux in the Hautes-Alpes. The Izoard pass reaches 2,361 metres and connects the Queyras to the Briançonnais. Its cargneule needles, isolated above the scree, give the site an immediately recognizable silhouette.
This photo print of the Casse Déserte in autumn is printed on demand on matte Dibond aluminium. The rendering highlights the scree, the cargneule pinnacles, and the curves of the Izoard road.
