Aiguille du Chardonnet and Aiguille d’Argentière face one another in a broad view of the Mont-Blanc massif. Snow-covered ridges, couloirs and dark walls structure the image, while low-angle light reveals the volumes without erasing the deep shadows of the glacial valleys. A central ice couloir separates the two snow-covered peaks. Its white line cuts through the rocky mass and makes it possible to follow the connection of the slopes up to the higher sections. The uniform blue sky keeps the profiles highly legible; the eye can move from one summit to the other without leaving the mineral structure of the photograph, organised around this glacial interval.

The composition is built on the dialogue between the two silhouettes: one more slender, the other more massive, separated by lines of snow and rock. Slate, blue and white tones reinforce the depth of the landscape and give the relief a distinctly mineral presence.

These two summits dominate the Argentière area, north of the Chamonix valley in Haute-Savoie. They rise above an environment of glaciers and high passes that forms one of the major mountaineering areas in the French Alps.
