Black and white photo of Aiguille du Fruit in the Vanoise Massif

In black and white, Aiguille du Fruit reveals above all its structure. Ridges, slabs and shadows become strong lines, while Col du Fruit and the relief of the Avals valley extend the composition toward more distant planes. The view from La Saulire keeps the great tower on the left, in front of a snow-covered slope and a more distant white basin on the right. Monochrome turns these distances into differences in tonal value: the nearby rock remains dense, while the snow opens up the following planes. The direction of the eye is therefore read through the arrangement of masses as much as through the details of the slabs.

The monochrome treatment removes the distraction of colour to bring out the contrasts in material. The blacks retain detail, the light areas preserve the texture of the limestone and the succession of relief gives the image particularly clear depth.

Located between Courchevel and Méribel, this Vanoise summit rises to 3,051 metres. It dominates a landscape of passes, bowls and limestone rock near the major high-altitude routes of Les Trois Vallées.
