Photo print of Lyon at dusk – Saint-Jean and Fourvière

At dusk, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral appears in the heart of Vieux Lyon, dominated by the Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica. Both monuments are aligned in the same perspective above the facades and quays of the Saône. The illuminated cathedral occupies the centre, above the waterfront facades and a narrow strip of water. On the hill, the metallic tower stands beside the basilica beneath the dark blue sky. These layered landmarks make the city’s heights clear, from the edge of the Saône to the silhouettes overlooking the night-time landscape.

The transitional light balances the blues of the sky and the warmer illumination of the buildings. Reflections animate the Saône, the facades remain legible, and the basilica gradually becomes a luminous point above the city without overshadowing the cathedral.

Saint-Jean occupies the historic centre on the right bank of the river, at the foot of the Fourvière hill. The visual proximity of the cathedral and the basilica summarises several centuries of Lyonnaise architecture, from the old urban fabric of the neighbourhood to the grand 19th-century edifice.
