Lac Sainte-Anne forms a wide turquoise surface at the bottom of an almost entirely mineral cirque, above Ceillac. The clear waters occupy the foreground, then the scree and walls lead the eye towards the peaks of Font Sancte. Large boulders rest in the grass beside the lake and give the shore a close, tangible texture. Beyond the turquoise water, many patches of snow dot the jagged rocky cirque. These scattered whites echo the pale stones in the foreground, with the water forming a broad area of colour between the two levels of the landscape.

The strength of the photograph lies in the contrast of materials and colours. The blue-green of the water stands out from the greys and ochres of the rock, while the absence of constructions and the simplicity of the framing reinforce the feeling of isolation characteristic of the site.

This high-altitude lake belongs to the Queyras massif, in the Hautes-Alpes. Its environment is characterised by sparse vegetation, vast scree slopes, and peaks that remain snow-capped late in the season, creating a clear transition with the larch forests located lower in the valley.
