Mont Pelvoux stands out behind larch trees that have turned golden in autumn. The trees occupy the foreground with their luminous needles, while the rock faces, snow, and glaciers of the summit add a colder depth to the background. In the steep-sided valley, a white line of water appears between the yellow-orange conifers. It provides a bright reference point in the tree cover beneath the great, lightly snow-covered rocky summit. This opening connects the nearby trees to the slopes in the background and adds a vertical direction to the colour contrast, from the high terrain down to the wooded part of the valley.

The photograph relies on the opposition between the warm tones of the vegetation and the bluish greys of the high mountains. The branches partially filter the view without obscuring the summit, creating multiple planes and an autumnal atmosphere that is both soft and mineral.

Pelvoux culminates at 3,946 metres in the Écrins National Park, above Vallouise-Pelvoux. The valleys in this sector are home to important larch forests, conifers that change colour before losing their needles as winter approaches.
