About this image
Mist envelops the facades of Vieux Lyon and the Saint-Georges district on the banks of the Saône. The church, the quays and the old buildings appear in successive layers, while a few autumn colours warm a palette dominated by greys. The bell tower and colourful facades are repeated almost symmetrically in the calm water. Behind them, the hill is hidden by mist and loses its outlines. This difference in sharpness gives the view its strength: the reflected district remains precise in the foreground, while the terrain fades above the roofs.
The fog simplifies the landscape without removing its depth. The Saône forms a soft foreground, the buildings emerge in the centre and the hill gradually disappears. The reddish-brown tones of the vegetation add some warmer points to this silent atmosphere.
Saint-Georges occupies the southern part of Vieux Lyon, between the river and the Fourvière hill. Along with Saint-Jean and Saint-Paul, it forms one of the three major historic sectors of the district, characterized by its narrow streets and old facades.
This photo print of Vieux Lyon and Saint-Georges in the mist, photographed by jef77, is made to order on matte Dibond aluminium. The finish preserves the subtle gradients and the muted atmosphere of autumn.
