The figures occupy only a small part of the frame, but their progress gives scale to the slope and the large rock face dominating the scene. The Plateau des Rouies lies in the Écrins massif above the Valgaudemar. This high-mountain area combines glaciers, snow couloirs and relief rising above 3,000 metres, in an environment mainly travelled by mountaineers. The movement of the snow and the diagonal of the rock face bring a particular tension to the photograph. The dark clothing of the rope team stands out against the whites and greys, while the high-altitude light reveals crystals and irregularities in the terrain.
