Lac d’Anterne stretches at the foot of the Rochers des Fiz, whose limestone cliffs close the background. Calm water repeats the lines of the relief, while alpine meadows and mineral shores create a broad composition balanced between the lake’s horizontality and the verticality of the walls. A small figure stands at the edge of the turquoise water between grass and residual snow. Its scale conveys the height of the stratified cliff dominating the lake. Layers of stone form a tight pattern behind the smoother surface of the water; this contrast of textures gives the panorama a precision visible even in its smallest reference points.

The photograph favours a clear reading of the landscape: the mirror of the water guides the eye toward the rocks, while shades of blue, green and grey give the whole scene a quiet, natural atmosphere. The contrast between the softness of the lake and the mass of the cliffs provides the image’s graphic strength.

Located at around 2,000 metres above sea level, this mountain lake lies in the heart of the Fiz range, in the Sixt-Passy nature reserve in Haute-Savoie. Its high-altitude cirque, accessible only on foot, belongs to an environment of alpine grassland and limestone relief typical of this part of the Alps.
