Photo print of Lac du Lauvitel in late spring

In late spring, Lac du Lauvitel regains its deep waters while patches of snow cling to the slopes of the Écrins. The still sparsely vegetated banks and clear rocks show that the high-altitude season begins later than in the valley. A torrent can be seen at the far end of the valley between the very steep wooded slopes. The deep blue lake fills the lower part of the image, before the rocky mountains closing off the view. This distant line of water gives direction to the basin, while the forests emphasise its enclosed shape and maintain dense textures on both sides.

The photograph relies on the difference in material between the dark water, the blocks on the banks, and the last snowfields. The framing gives real prominence to the lake without erasing the mountains that structure the landscape, and highlights this short transitional period between snowmelt and the return of vegetation.

The lake is located above Bourg-d'Oisans, in a valley enclosed by Rochail, Muraillette, and Signal du Lauvitel. This sector of the Écrins massif combines forests, mineral slopes, and high ridges around a particularly vast natural body of water.
