The turquoise waters of Lac de Serre-Ponçon wind between light shores, wooded slopes, and the relief of the Southern Alps. The curves of the lake organise the composition and draw the eye towards the different valleys surrounding the reservoir. A straight shoreline structure stands out on the right beside the lake’s broad expanse of blue. Cliffs and wooded slopes narrow the view before the mountains in the distance. This man-made line provides a discreet landmark in the landscape, whose natural forms remain more irregular around the intense colour of the water.

The colour of the water is the primary focal point, but the framing gives significant space to the mountains. Blues and greens echo the greys of the shores, while the more southern light gives this alpine landscape an identity distinct from high-altitude lakes.

Fed by the Durance and Ubaye rivers, Serre-Ponçon stretches between the Hautes-Alpes and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Variations in water level reveal mineral strata on some banks and constantly alter the design of coves, peninsulas, and coastal slopes.
