At nightfall, Lyon lights up around the Rhône. Bridges and quays form long luminous lines, while the Ferris wheel installed on Place Bellecour becomes a circular landmark in the urban landscape. Its colours extend into the water alongside the lights of the city centre. On the hill, a large religious building accompanies the bright circle of the wheel and the lines of the quays. The dark blue sky allows these landmarks to stand out, while horizontal reflections stretch their colours across the calm water. The photograph thus preserves several forms of lighting, from the city’s high point to the long luminous surfaces occupying the river.

The broad framing gives the reflections room to breathe and prevents the lights from becoming a purely abstract motif. Deep blues of sky and Rhône receive touches of yellow, red and white, creating a lively yet balanced nocturnal atmosphere.

This view brings together several dimensions of Lyon: the river, the Presqu’île and the night-time activity around Bellecour. The Ferris wheel, visible during its seasonal installation, adds a temporary presence to a panorama structured by buildings, bridges and riverbanks.
