Le sommet culmine à 1 787 mètres, au cœur du Grand Site de France Puy Mary – Volcan du Cantal. Autour de lui, l’érosion glaciaire a creusé de profondes vallées et laissé une succession de crêtes, de dômes et d’éperons rocheux caractéristiques des monts du Cantal. La Brèche de Rolland, appelée localement le Pourtaou, forme une coupure reconnaissable dans les reliefs du Peyre-Arse.
