Carved into the cliff, the Combe Laval road appears above a sea of clouds that almost entirely obscures the valley. Tunnels, retaining walls, and bends form a narrow line between the pale limestone and the void. The road connects the Saint-Jean-en-Royans area to the Col de la Machine, on the western slope of the Vercors. Built between 1893 and 1898 to facilitate timber transport, it crosses a cirque of Urgonian cliffs, now a protected landscape. The cloud cover simplifies the composition and accentuates the verticality of the relief. The roadway seems suspended above a bottomless space, while the details of the rock and structures remind us of the reality of this spectacular route.
