About this image
Carved into the cliff, the Combe Laval road appears above a sea of clouds that almost entirely obscures the valley. Tunnels, retaining walls, and bends form a narrow line between the pale limestone and the void. A bare forest crowns the great vertical cliff above the white layer. The blue sky makes its upper edge sharp, while the foot of the terrain disappears into the clouds. This separation gives the rock a strong presence in the view, with the fine pattern of the trees adding another texture along the edge of the plateau.
The cloud cover simplifies the composition and accentuates the verticality of the relief. The roadway seems suspended above a bottomless space, while the details of the rock and structures remind us of the reality of this spectacular route.
The road connects the Saint-Jean-en-Royans area to the Col de la Machine, on the western slope of the Vercors. Built between 1893 and 1898 to facilitate timber transport, it crosses a cirque of Urgonian cliffs, now a protected landscape.
This photo print of the Combe Laval road above the clouds is printed to order on matte Dibond aluminium. The finish preserves the road's finesse, the cliff's textures, and the scene's surreal atmosphere.
