Forests and meadows take on autumn hues, while the high rock faces and lighter peaks close off the cirque above Kandersteg. The lake is located in the Bernese Oberland, in the heart of the "Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch" natural World Heritage site. Nestled in a vast rock basin, it is surrounded by the Blüemlisalp mountains, whose glaciers and peaks rising over 3,000 meters dominate the valley. The photograph combines three very different registers: the intense blue of the water, the warm colors of the vegetation, and the cold grays of the high mountains. This progression guides the eye from the shores to the peaks, without losing the transparency or the variations in depth of the lake.
