In black and white, the Aiguilles du Mont-Blanc appear as a succession of granite blades, ridges and snow-covered slopes. The monochrome treatment removes colour to focus attention on the lines of the relief, the textures of the rock and the contrasts of the high mountains. Vertical walls frame a glacier partly wrapped in clouds. Their sharp points remain strongly contrasted, while the glacial surfaces soften in the veil. This difference gives the black-and-white image particular depth: rock forms a crisp frame while ice and clouds extend the photograph toward planes with less defined contours.

Light creates several levels of grey, from the bright whites of the snow to the deep shadows of the rock faces. This tonal range reinforces the verticality of the summits and provides a very precise reading of the ridges without making the whole scene harsh.

These aiguilles dominate the Chamonix valley within the Mont-Blanc massif. They belong to a landscape shaped by granite and glaciers, where steep walls alternate with couloirs, snowfields and glacial basins.
